If you’re in the mood to try something absolutely indulgent, then look no further than our Gruyere grilled cheese sandwich with caramelized onions. The nutty Gruyere cheese combines with the savory-sweet caramelized Vidalia onions for a decadent flavor that will have you making this one again and again.
If you’re a fan of French onion soup, then this sandwich is for you. Gruyere cheese can get a bit pricey, but this gourmet grilled cheese sandwich is worth the extra expense. Depending on your location, it could be a difficult cheese to find, but it is typically stocked in the gourmet or specialty cheese sections of your local market. A popular cheese to use in fondue, Gruyere cheese is one of the best melting cheeses out there, which makes it perfect to use on a grilled cheese sandwich.
With that said, this grilled cheese will cook in under five minutes in your air fryer, but it is important to note that caramelizing onions is going to be time-consuming but still takes less than thirty minutes. A half-hour may seem like an eternity in comparison to the four-minute air frying time, but I promise it will be worth the wait.
I recommend using a Vidalia or other variety of sweet onion to enhance the flavor of the Gruyere. However, if you prefer a stronger type of onion, go for it. Create your own culinary masterpiece.
To caramelize the onion, I quarter the onion and cut into thin strips. In a skillet, heat up some olive oil, toss the onions int the olive oil and coat with salt and pepper. Cook on high for ten minutes, stirring often. At this point, the onions should become more fragrant. Reduce your heat to medium and continue cooking and stirring in the olive oil for fifteen more minutes until the onions are the color of caramel and produce a sweet-smelling aroma.
Slice the Gruyere cheese, place the slices on buttered Brioche bread, and top with the caramelized onion. Then, place the sandwich in your air fryer, cooking for around four minutes, flipping once.

My question is why would you air fry this grilled cheese when you already have a heated dirty pan after caramelizing your onions.
Use the pan.
Because this is an air fryer web site, John. 🙂
Ha- great comeback!
Actually, we generally sautee up a big ol’ skillet of peppers and onions ahead of time, ‘cuz we use that that sorta thing on all sorts of dishes ’round here.
Just got me a Ninja Foodi AirFryer a couple of months ago, so I’m currently learning about all the possibilities. I’m sure there’s a great way to fire-roast peppers and onions in there.
Thanks, RC. 🙂 That’s a great idea to pre-saute your veggies and have them ready to add from the fridge when needed. And I really like your idea about fire-roasting peppers!
