Who doesn’t love brownies? And around the holidays, I’m always looking for fun treats to make with my son. He lives for chocolate, and brownies are one of his favorite treats, which is why we began experimenting with brownies in the air fryer.

Baking Brownies in the Air Fryer

While cooking meats, vegetables, and frozen foods are pretty straight forward in an air fryer, baking is another story. Recipes have to be adjusted sometimes in order to fit baking rounds and tins inside the basket. It took a couple of tries and adjustments, but I figured out the best time and temperature combination for baking these chocolaty delights. Basically, your air fryer is a portable convection oven, so with the rapid air technology, things cook faster and more evenly. The trick is getting the right temp and time.

Oven Brownies vs Brownies in the Air Fryer

Honestly, the only major difference is texture. In an air fryer, the brownies will have a slightly crunchier texture on the outside with the warm chewy middle most people love. I found the flavor to be the same, but since you have to work with a smaller baking pan in an air fryer, the brownies are thicker than those made in a regular baking pan in a conventional oven.

In the air fryer, there is less worry over burning little hands. My favorite assistant is my four-year-old, and I find myself more relaxed with him around the air fryer. Obviously, ovens pose a burn risk when children are helping out in the kitchen. I always worry that he is going to forget and burn a hand or a finger, or even worse, stumble and fall near the open oven. Since the air fryer is smaller and features a heat resistant handle, I feel more at ease with cooking with my son.

Decorating Brownies in the Air Fryer

Just as with a conventional oven, you still have to allow time for the brownies to cool on a wire rack.  When cooled, you can add sprinkles, icing, or powdered sugar.  These make great treats for parties, festive kids’ snacks and even gifts.
